Apple's 37th WWDC opened Tim Cook's curtain call — and delivered the biggest AI overhaul in the company's history. Here's everything that matters for photographers, creators, and Apple users.
Craig Federighi laid out a clear agenda for WWDC 2026: platform performance, trust & safety, and a massive AI push built around a revamped Siri. Underlying all of it — Google's Gemini AI under Apple's privacy hood.
Apple's 37th WWDC marks a historic transition. After 14 years as CEO, Tim Cook will hand the reins to John Ternus — SVP of Hardware Engineering — on September 1. Cook closed the keynote saying: "I truly believe the best is still ahead."
Powered by Google's Gemini model under a strict on-device privacy layer, the new Siri is conversational, context-aware, and lives in a dedicated standalone app across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Watch, and Vision Pro. All conversations sync privately via iCloud.
Note: Siri AI launches in English in September 2026 as a beta. EU availability on iOS/iPadOS 27 delayed due to Digital Markets Act.
🔭 On Vision Pro: Siri lives as a 3D orb you can place anywhere in your space and activate simply by looking at it.
Apple explicitly said the goal was to help photographers "enhance their images in ways that respect the intent of the original moment." Three new AI editing tools powered by Apple Intelligence are landing with iOS 27.
Using depth data and spatial understanding, you can reposition the virtual camera angle of a photo after it was taken. Touch and drag to shift perspective — AI generates new content only where gaps appear, keeping the original scene intact. Great for fixing composition misses, accidental tilts, or missed eye contact timing.
Expand an image beyond its original borders — add more background, change aspect ratios (portrait to landscape, 16:9 to square), or make breathing room around your subject. Generative AI fills in realistic scene content. Think of it as an intelligent canvas expansion that understands your photo's environment.
The existing Cleanup tool receives a major overhaul. Tap, brush, or circle any distracting element — the system now reconstructs backgrounds with improved detail and texture accuracy, even in complex scenes. Apple says the quality gap versus competitors like Pixel has been closed significantly.
Additional wins for photographers and anyone who shares photos
One of the most applauded announcements in the room. iCloud Shared Albums now share photos at full resolution — and the feature works cross-platform with Android and Windows users too.
The search index powering Photos, Spotlight, and Mail has been fully re-architected to be more stable, efficient, and comprehensive — indexing new images almost immediately.
iOS 27 and macOS 27 include performance improvements that make captures appear in your gallery 70% faster than before. Scrolling through large libraries will be noticeably snappier.
Maps gets a richer Flyover experience, blending 3D renderings with improved aerial photography for significantly higher detail — a win for location scouting.
These tools live in the native Photos app — not Lightroom. Think of Reframe, Extend, and upgraded Cleanup as Apple's answer to Photoshop's Generative Fill and Lightroom's healing brush, baked into the iPhone camera roll. They're non-destructive and run on-device. For your Lightroom workflow, these are pre-edit tools you might use before importing into LR for color grading and final adjustments.
"New Apple Intelligence capabilities for images — the goal is to help photographers enhance their images in ways that respect the intent of the original moment."

The Mac gets a performance-first update with design refinements, a tamed Liquid Glass, and a hard Intel cutoff. Only Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and later) will run macOS 27.
What's new in the macOS 27 visual layer
System-wide control from ultra-clear to fully tinted — finally let you turn down that transparency effect to a level you're comfortable with.
A more consistent toolbar design across all apps, and sidebars that stretch to screen edges to reduce visual distractions.
All macOS windows adopt a consistent tighter corner radius — a subtle but cohesive refinement across every app.
macOS 27 runs only on Apple Silicon (M1+). Intel Mac users stay on macOS 26 / Sequoia.
iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, tvOS 27 — the "27" numbering unifies all Apple OS versions. Developer betas are available today; public betas arrive in July; full release comes in fall 2026.
Siri AI in the Dynamic Island, Write with Siri everywhere, Spatial Reframe / Extend / Cleanup in Photos, rebuilt Search, AirPods Custom EQ, full-res iCloud Shared Albums. Panoramas transform into immersive environments.
Gains all Siri AI features alongside iPad-optimised layouts. Described by Apple as "our biggest iPadOS release," with expanded multitasking tools and the full Apple Intelligence suite.
Siri AI now available on wrist — without needing an iPhone nearby on newer models. Workout Buddy now speaks Spanish. Siri AI available in EU on watchOS even where iOS is delayed.
A 3D Siri orb lives in your spatial environment — look at it to activate. Control Center redesigned. Curvature windows updated. Spatial Scenes more immersive. Panoramas convert to spatial environments for Vision Pro.
Supports Apple Intelligence for the first time on Apple TV. tvOS 27 is compatible with models going back a decade — all the way to 2015 Apple TV hardware, though full AI features need newer models.
Significant new tools for child safety — reflecting global government pressure on tech companies. New Screen Time features, communication limits, and generated safety descriptions for home camera clips in the Home app.
Safari now automatically organises open tabs into topics using Apple Intelligence — if you're a tab-hoarder, this is for you.
iOS 27 finally gives AirPods a customisable equaliser. Adjust your listening profile directly from Settings — something audiophiles have wanted for years.
Security notifications group into single updating alerts. Camera clips get AI-generated video descriptions — useful for accessibility and quick review.
Beyond ChatGPT, Siri will open to Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude as alternative AI providers. Users choose which model handles specific queries.
Point your camera at a restaurant bill and Siri AI helps you split it between friends — pulling together Visual Intelligence, Wallet, and contacts seamlessly.
A meaningful addition: Apple Health now supports tracking perimenopause and menopause alongside its existing cycle and heart health tracking features.
Reframe, Extend, and upgraded Cleanup live in the native Photos app — not in Lightroom or Photoshop. Think of them as powerful on-device triage and composition rescue tools before you pull shots into your editing workflow. Apple processes Reframe edits via cloud server when saving, so an internet connection is needed.
For years, iCloud Shared Albums compressed photos. That's over. Full-resolution sharing — including with Android and Windows users — means you can now use Shared Albums as a legitimate client delivery or collaboration tool for the first time.
The Mac gains a real conversational AI assistant. In macOS 27, Ctrl + click on images, text, or videos opens Siri AI context menus. Select multiple RAW files and ask Siri to compare them — practical workflow integration photographers will actually use.
Every feature covered here — Photos AI tools, Siri AI, performance boosts — requires Apple Silicon (M1 or later Mac, iPhone 15 Pro or later for advanced Siri). If you're still on an Intel Mac, this is the year to plan an upgrade. The feature gap just widened significantly.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI require: iPhone 16 or later · iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max · iPad mini (A17 Pro) · iPad with M1 or later · Mac with M1 or later · Apple Vision Pro · Apple Watch Series 10 or later · Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later
